The goal was to develop highly specialised fire protection materials that can withstand the extreme conditions of an arena fire. Custom solutions also had to be developed for the special architecture of the structure, which is made up of huge grandstand segments.
The Arena auf Schalke site is a former mining area with a ramified tunnel system. In order to withstand the possible building movements, statically decoupled segments were used in the construction, separated from one another by large joints. REX developed shape-retaining joint filler segments with Litaflex SM30 and Flaton joint sealants especially for this case. Their special one-sided fastening guarantees fire safety even during large fluctuations.
