The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) is a testimony to modern engineering and, due to its special architecture, presented our fire protection experts with special challenges that had to be solved.

Task

In order to prevent rapid spread of fire to the entire concert building in the event of fire, it is divided into different fire compartments. Rex SG 300 joint cord securely seals breakthroughs in these wall or ceiling sections that are necessary for structural reasons and, depending on the design, offers up to 180 minutes of safety against fire and smoke. Vital life-saving minutes to exit the building in time.

Challenge

The Elbphilharmonie (Elbe Philharmonic Hall) was a highly complex construction project with extremely stringent requirements. REX’s accumulated experience, product certifications and large product portfolio enabled it to find fast and efficient solutions and meet the challenges it faced.

Consulting
It is often not apparent from the outset which fire protection measures will be required for the construction of individual building structures, such as the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. We possess the necessary expertise to properly pigeonhole even the largest projects and find the required fire protection products.

The result
Despite the unique structure of the three concert halls and the overall layout of the Elbphilharmonie, the transfer of fire and smoke within the building to different areas can be prevented in the long term, allowing valuable time in the event of a fire.

Project summary

Completed in 2016, the concert hall represents one of the cultural monuments of modernity. REX was able to meet the complex challenges thanks to its broad product portfolio and expertise accumulated over decades.
