Automotive heat protection reflectors
Safety on track

The technical textiles division further developed an existing product to meet the industry’s more stringent requirements for one of Germany’s largest automotive manufacturers. The textile, which is coated with aluminium foil and a high-temperature-resistant silicone, serves as a heat protection cover in the vicinity of the catalytic converter.

Task

The main objective was to protect a high-temperature area within the car body from radiant heat. In the process, an existing product had to be adapted to changing requirements in order, among other things, to protect components with a lower temperature resistance from heat while simultaneously keeping temperature loss low.

Challenge

In addition to a surface with strong media resistance that can withstand high temperatures, it was also necessary to prevent possible delamination of the aluminium foil in the temperature range up to 350°C. Furthermore, it should be possible to easily dismantle the textile protective cover by means of snap fasteners, and airborne fibre during fabrication and assembly should be kept to a minimum in the process.

Customer reconciliation
To ensure that the high safety and quality requirements of the industry could be seamlessly met, the detailed requirements and applicable standards were discussed with the garment supplier in close consultation with the automotive manufacturer (OEM).
Component registration
All materials used had to be precisely catalogued in a specification sheet and fed into the IMDS (International Material Data System). The globalised management system of the automotive industry serves to record the detailed material and chemical composition of all components that are deployed.
The result
Through the initial sample inspection report, the initial sample was tested for compliance with stringent automotive standards. As a result, the REX fabric structure for heat reflection could be mass produced and now guarantees safety in thousands of vehicles.
Project summary

Products do not always have to be completely redeveloped to meet the ever-increasing demands of the automotive industry. This is demonstrated by the example of the fabric for the textile heat shield from REX. This easily dismantled high-performance product was explicitly adapted to the new requirements and needs and, thanks to a complex and certified test procedure, meets all the necessary standards to be used not only in the automotive sector but also for series production and assembly. This includes high media resistance to substances such as oil and petrol and extreme resilience to heat up to 350 °C, with radiation sources of up to 1000 °C – customised and mass-produced by REX.
